North Korea’s Foreign Ministry issued the statement on Monday saying it was “ready and willing” to retaliate if the new U.N. sanctions were approved during a vote planned for Monday evening. “The forthcoming measures to be taken by [North Korea] will cause the U.S. the greatest pain and suffering it had ever gone through in its entire history,” the foreign ministry said in the statement. A revised, and watered-down, resolution banned imports for natural gas liquids but only capped oil exports to North Korea. Russian President Vladimir Putin has been vocal about his distaste for imposing additional sanctions on North Korea, saying a Russian-Chinese road map will resolve the nuclear crisis. The call for tougher sanctions was spawned after North Korea conducted the sixth nuclear test in its history last week after a series of missile launches earlier this year – violating U.N. resolutions.
