However scientists fear it will not be possible to eradicate Covid-19, so some restrictions may need to stay in place until there is an effective vaccine - which is expected to take 18 months. A possible "exit strategy" could involve allowing children to return to school at the beginning of June, followed by shops. However, a senior government source also told the paper that measures will be needed to reduce contact between children. Government advisers have said that lockdown measures will need to stay in place until there is evidence of a clear decline in new cases.
