PBS’ Masterpiece tonight will bring Victor Hugo’s epic novel, Les Miserables, to life in a new, non-musical, six-episode mini-series. Dominic West (The Affair, The Wire) stars as Jean Valjean, the most famous fugitive in literature, with David Oyelowo (Selma, Small Island) as his relentless pursuer, Javert. West and Oyelowo also serve as executive producers. For most of that quarter century, Valjean has been serving a sentence of hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread. At a panel discussion with the series’ lead actors in New York last week, West called Valjean “the greatest hero in literature, a proto-superhero.
