Maple Leafs centre and assistant captain Auston Matthews was named the NHL’s first star for December. Matthews caught fire last month, scoring in all seven games he played — including three multi-goal games. He record his fourth career hat trick against the Colorado Avalanche on Dec. 1, and led the league in power-play goals (four) and points (eight). Vegas Golden Knights forward Max Pacioretty was the second star, Vancouver Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko third star.
