The reproduction number - 'R' for short - is the average number of people who get infected by each person with coronavirus. A month ago, when Boris Johnson schools and non-essential shops would reopen, he explicitly said the changes should keep 'R' below one. Today Mr Johnson's spokesman was asked if his scientific advisors had set out advice on how the new changes would affect 'R'.
