No plan to withdraw free power for farms: Minister

Thangamani on Tuesday told the Legislative Assembly that the government had no plan to hike the power tariff and withdraw free power supply to agriculture pumpsets and hutments. The government would never withdraw free power supply to farm sector and the purpose of introducing smart meters was to enable the electricity workers to take reading from their offices. “The 500 free units for handloom weavers and 200 units for power loom would also continue,” Mr. Thangamani clarified. Mr. Stalin also expressed concern over loss of five kuruvai crops and the failure of samba due to drought. To this, Chief Minister Panneerselvam said the government had already filed a petition against Andhra Pradesh in the Supreme Court.
