'No hiding place': SA's energy sector is in need of policy shift

An urgent shift in policy is crucial for South Africa’s energy sector to be able to supply the country with the necessary electricity needed to power households and industry. Delivering one of the keynote opening addresses at Enlit Africa 2023 in Cape Town, the city’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, ,Alderman James Vos said there’s no hiding from the country’s power woes. Vos said millions of South Africans are being adversely affected by crippling loadshedding, with “lives and livelihoods” at risk. Vos said one of the projects underway and which is expected to be a major centre for renewable energy development, is the Atlantis Special Economic Zone. Vos also made mention that the City of Cape Town, had, in April, issued the largest of its loadshedding protection tenders to date – a 500MW dispatchable energy tender.
