COLOMBO (News 1st); Minister of Education Dinesh Gunawardena informed the Select Committee on identifying amendments to the Elections and Elections System that the Attorney General had informed that although it is necessary to hold Provincial Council elections soon, a legal impediment has occurred in this regard. According to the Attorney General, without the passage of an Elections Act according to the recommendations of the the Parliamentary Select Committee to identify amendments to the Elections and Elections System, the Provincial Council Elections cannot be held. The Attorney General has informed the committee that even if the existing Act on Provincial Council Elections has been repealed, the Provincial Council Elections cannot be held by any means without the enactment of a new Act. Participating in a meeting of the Select Committee held at the Parliament Complex yesterday (8), Minister Gunawardena pointed out that the function of the select committee is to make recommendations and not to make law. Members of the committee also reiterated the importance of the holding the Provincial Council elections expeditiously.
