Aamir Khan ProductionsPrior to May, 2017, no Indian film had ever reached the $100 million (INR 650 crore) gross box office threshold at Indian theaters, and none had reached $50 million (INR 325 crore) in overseas grosses. Until this month, the biggest Indian film ever was the 2014 Aamir Khan-starring sci-fi comedy PK, which had amassed $74 million in domestic Indian box office, and an additional $46 million internationally. First, Baahubali 2, the S.S. Rajamouli-directed fantasy action-adventure epic blasted off on April 28th, smashing every imaginable record for an Indian film box on its way to a staggering 12.53 billion rupees (US $191 million) domestic cume, and an additional 3.83 billion rupees (US $59 million) overseas. The film is still in release, so its worldwide total of $250 million could go considerably higher, especially after its release in China. In fact, I was prompted to write this article because I’ve received so many requests to set the record straight.
