16:06The government has notified parliament that it intends to “opt-in” to a new legal framework for Europol. This is the first major “opt-in/out” decision taken by the government since the Brexit vote in June. The new Europol framework updates the existing 2007 model but doesn’t extend its powers any further over member states. The decision secures British participation in Europol, particularly in Europe-wide efforts to tackle terrorism and cybercrime up to the date of Brexit. A new opt-in decision is now required following changes to the legal framework to the agency.
