Grief and fury coursed through social media. At a time when digital media is deepening social divides in Western democracies, China is manipulating online discourse to enforce the Communist Party’s consensus. It takes an enormous bureaucracy, armies of people, specialised technology made by private contractors, the constant monitoring of digital news outlets and social media platforms — and, presumably, lots of money. ‘Severe Crackdown’Li’s death in Wuhan loosed a geyser of emotion that threatened to tear Chinese social media out from under the CAC’s control. They receive tasks within the app, post the requisite comments from their personal social media accounts, then upload a screenshot, ostensibly to certify that the task was completed.
