Nikki Haley, former governor of South Carolina and United Nations ambassador under former President Donald J. Trump, participated in a 90-minute CNN town hall on Sunday night to attempt to boost her standing in the 2024 Republican presidential race. Ms. Haley was calm and knowledgeable, and while she contrasted herself with Trump, she did not attack him or current President Biden. Jake Tapper, the anchor who moderated the event, did not find the need to correct Ms. Haley. Ms. Haley suggested young workers’ retirement age should be raised and wealthy individuals’ benefits should be limited to save Social Security and Medicare. Ms. Haley deflected on whether she supported a six-week abortion ban, a position recently taken by her home state of South Carolina.
