Amnesty International has announced that it will close its two offices in Hong Kong by the end of the year. The organisation cited the safety of staff trying to operate under the national security law as the reason for the withdrawal. The law, imposed by the Chinese government last year, has been used as a ‘pretext to restrict rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association, as well as to repress dissent and political opposition’, said Amnesty.
