Nigeria, and other sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries recycle less than 0.1 per cent of electronic waste (e-waste). ITU data showed the continent’s e-waste recycling rate pales in comparison to other continents. For example, Asia is shown to recycle 11.07 per cent, while the Americas recycles 9.4 per cent of their e-waste. The global e-waste recycling rate was estimated to stand at only 20 per cent of e-waste in 2016, despite rich deposits of gold, silver, copper, platinum, palladium and other high-value recoverable materials in many ICT devices and equipment. In terms of e-waste legislation, the ITU highlights that in 2017, 67 countries had e-waste legislation in place.
