Sawchuk left his laptop computer and notes at the media table and stepped into the lobby. “He said someone accused me of surreptitiously recording an in-camera meeting,” Sawchuk said. “I saw some Niagara Regional Police officers enter the building. “Tonight, officials representing Niagara Region carried out an unwarranted attack on the free press and the public it served,” Scott said. “Niagara Region, indeed no municipality, has the legal right to seize a reporter’s computer or notes.
