NiOh, the new contender from Team Ninja, has all the hallmarks of an also-ran: it uses a similar bonfire system, it has the same uncompromising combat and a similar dread-filled aesthetic. Team Ninja is no stranger to the world of high-difficulty: the Ninja Gaiden series provides an early benchmark for that. And so you'll notice quickly in NiOh that it feels as much its own thing as it does a Soulslike, which is a term I'm going to use from this day forward. There are far, far more systems at play here than I've experienced in any similar title. So far, NiOh is possessed of a certain technical perfection that leads itself to impressive depth.
