The authors say that any benefits from Net Zero have not been evenly felt while previous successes in the removal of coal and the growth of renewables were "often invisible to the public". ‌The 2008 Climate Change Act set a legal framework for the reduction of greenhouse gases while in 2019, Britain committed to becoming Net Zero by 2050. In Scotland, the SNP has pushed its Net Zero mission at the expense of the North Sea oil and gas sector. The nationalist executive wanted to reach Net Zero by 2045, but has been forced to backtrack on interim targets. The likes of the Greens and Lib Dems want governments to work even faster towards Net Zero.
