Chase Kalisz reacts after winning the men's 400-meter individual medley final at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials Sunday in Omaha. The eight newcomers range in age from 19 to 23, some swimming in the Olympic trials for the first time. The surprises haven’t stopped through the first three days of the U.S. Olympic swimming trials, where eight of the 10 winners are first-time Olympians. The familiar names have been surpassed by swimmers such as Chase Kalisz (IM), Olivia Smoliga (backstroke) and Ryan Murphy (backstroke). As part of the sea change in U.S. swimming, defending Olympic champions Ryan Lochte (400-meter individual medley), Missy Franklin (100 backstroke) and Matt Grevers (100 backstroke) missed out on qualifying for the Rio de Janeiro Games in the events.
