It made sense for a lot of reasons, for a long time, but we now know for sure Kalvin Phillips won't be plying his trade for Newcastle United after all. With finances extremely tight on Tyneside this month, even a loan fee was off-putting to the north east outfit. Instead, it is back to the drawing board for Newcastle's transfer team, who now only have five days to find reinforcements before the winter window closes. Will Howe and Newcastle rue the fact they didn't take a chance on Phillips until the end of the season? Thankfully, Dan Ashworth and the ownership have not let Howe down on the transfer front since the 2021 takeover.
