New weapon to sweep away leaves on line

Fallen leaves can stick to damp, creating a slippery layer that can affect trains’ braking and cause delays Matt Cardy/Getty ImagesNew technology designed to end disruption caused by leaves on the line is to be tested as train companies prepare for the annual autumn menace. Network Rail will close a commuter line in the West Midlands for four days next month to test a braking system designed to improve punctuality during the season. Small jets fitted to the front of passenger trains will spray sand directly onto the rail to improve the grip of the wheels. It will be able to detect when wheels start to slip and target specific sections of track. The system is designed to reduce the need to slow down over particularly slippery sections of the line, which causes serious delays for passengers.
