It comes after the Government introduced a ban on new build leasehold house sales in 2019. The proposals form part of a wider crack down that will include ground rent charges that double every 10 years. In the UK, leasehold property owners are paying an average of £319 in ground rent costs every year, totalling £447million. It recommends that there should be no ongoing ground rent under this extended lease, and landlords shouldn't be able to use the lease extension process to impose new obligations. Professor Nick Hopkins, commissioner for property law, said: "The leasehold system is not working for millions of homeowners in England and Wales.
