By Pamodi WaravitaThe Sri Lanka Press Council Law, No. 5 of 1973 as amended, which is currently restricted to the print media, would be amended this year to cover electronic and new media as well, Minister of Mass Media Keheliya Rambukwella told The Morning yesterday (5). Rambukwella said that, although the new amendments would not aim to regulate social media, he believes that the public must have an equal opportunity to respond to new forms of media. However, Thambawita mentioned that new media raises complicated issues since new media does not always have a proper organisational structure. A Cabinet of Ministers’ decision taken on 4 January stated that the Press Council would be reorganised to cover electronic and new media, in addition to print media.
