New database on human trafficking for Sri Lanka


Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Justice Piyumanthi Peiris addressing on behalf of the National Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force of the MinistryA database on human trafficking for Sri Lanka was launched by The Asia Foundation on 25 February 2021 at Waters Edge, Battaramulla. The database is intended to help first responders identify a potential case of trafficking and flag it for further investigation or refer a victim for related services. A first responder is anyone who comes into first contact with a victim of trafficking and plays the crucial role of identification. The database will capture key information on a possible case of trafficking in persons based ona complaint made by a victim or someone close to a victim. These three data collection systemsare expected to ensure the recording oftrafficking-related data from identification to investigation right through to prosecution, giving a comprehensive idea about the situationof trafficking in persons in Sri Lanka.
