New books remember the Great Halifax Explosion

When the French munitions ship Mont-Blanc and the Belgian relief vessel Imo collided, the explosion didn’t happen immediately. The explosion laid waste to much of Halifax, killing those who were eating breakfast, in school, out walking, or watching from their doorway or window. Now, with the 100th anniversary of the explosion coming on Wednesday, a bevy of books has been released to mark the event. One of the best and most in-depth is Ken Cuthbertson’s sweeping The Halifax Explosion: Canada’s Worst Disaster (HarperCollins). In the end, he writes, no one went to jail and both ships were blamed.
