New bin scheme to start in Timaru and Waimate

Blue, green, red and yellow bins, for glass, green waste, rubbish and recycling respectively, are now lined up for the Timaru and Waimate districts. Timaru and Waimate will switch to four bin schemes consisting of a 140 litre red rubbish bin, 240 litre yellow recycling bin, 240 litre green organics bin and a 45 litre blue crate for glass. The new scheme, to be run by Envirowaste, is part of a $112 million joint waste management contract the Timaru, Waimate and Mackenzie district councils signed in 2020. Waimate District mayor Craig Rowley said the majority of submissions (73 per cent) from community consultation opted for the new service. However, at least one Waimate district resident – who did not wish to be named – is frustrated with the new scheme before its even begun.
