PUNE: Two senators in the United States have jointly introduced a Bill that seeks to increase the number of green cards issued every year and make other changes to the current immigration policy. The move comes even as another Bill, the S386 Immigration Bill, seeking to usher in a liberalised green card regime, is set for vote in the US Senate on Thursday night India time.Democratic party senators Dick Durbin and Patrick Leahy introduced on Wednesday the Resolving Extended Limbo for Immigrant Employees and Families (RELIEF) Act, which essentially seeks to eliminate the backlog in family and employment green cards, currently between 10 and 150 years, according to green card lawyers. As a result, immigrants are stuck in crippling backlogs for many years,” senator Durbin said. “The solution to this backlog is clear: increase the number of green cards. I’m proud to introduce this common sense legislation to finally eliminate the family and employment green card backlog." If enacted, it would double the number of green cards issued annually.
