New Zealand's on-farm dairy emissions most efficient: Study

Dairy farmer George Moss uses a computer programme called Overseer to monitor his carbon emissions and nitrate use on his farm near Tokoroa, Waikato. A new study shows New Zealand dairy has the lowest carbon footprint of 18 countries looked at, including the US, Denmark and the Netherlands. The study showed New Zealand was the most efficient producer after comparing carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions per kilogram of milk, specifically fat and protein corrected milk (FPCM). Waikato dairy farmer George Moss said grass-based farming and animal breeding techniques were key to further reducing carbon emissions from dairy farming. “We are world-leading at emissions efficient milk production, but we must continue to adapt and adopt new technology and knowledge.
