New Zealand's best bach review: Laidback luxe in Te Kaha, East CapeBOOKABACH The home's oversized windows, wide decks and spacious bedrooms helped make it a winner in the design category of the Bach of the Year Awards. Overlooking the ocean in the tiny community of Te Kaha, about an hour's drive up the East Cape from Ōpōtiki, this bach is a perfect place to enjoy the simple pleasures of the New Zealand summer - in style. Like many beaches on the cape, Maraetai has more stones than sand - rubble from the Raukumara mountain range that forms its jagged spine. Continuing up the cape along the Pacific Coast Highway, I pulled over at Whanarua Bay, reputedly the prettiest on the coast. More information Te Kaha is 71 kilometres from Ōpōtiki along scenic SH35.
