New Zealand school told trans pupil 'God doesn't make mistakes' - then they tried to kill themselves

A Christian school has been compared to 'a cult' after it emerged a transgender student attempted to commit suicide after being told by a staff member that 'God doesn't make mistakes'. The comment was made to the victim by a staff member at Bethlehem College - a New Zealand school located in the North Island's Bay of Plenty region. Paul Shakes, chair of Bethlehem College board of trustees, said the school was 'wrestling' with how to provide 'care and protection'. Prominent gay conversion therapy activist, Shaneel Lal, described the school as a 'cult' and said its guidelines are discriminatory and against the law. 'Bethlehem College admits that gender-affirming care for trans people is contrary to their beliefs and will attempt to stop trans students from getting affirming care.'
