The New York Times Op-Docs, the award-winning distributor behind 2022 Oscar winner "The Queen of Basketball" and 2024 Oscar nominee "Island in Between," has debuted the short documentary "Instruments of a Beating Heart" from director Ema Ryan Yamazaki on The New York Times. The film is a contender for the 2025 Academy Awards in the best documentary short category. "Instruments of a Beating Heart" was produced by Eric Nyari of Cineric Creative and co-produced by NHK, Japan's public media organization. In "Instruments of a Beating Heart," first graders in a Tokyo public elementary school are presented with a challenge for the final semester: to form an orchestra and perform "Ode to Joy" at a school ceremony. Op-Docs, The New York Times's award-winning short documentary film series, is part of The Times's Opinion video department.
