New York Fetes French New Wave Filmmaker Agnes Varda With Tributes And One-Woman Art Show

Varda’s first art exhibition in this city, it features works made from 1949 to the present. Calder et sa famille (1954) presents artist Alexander Calder, his wife and daughters on a park bench in 1950s Paris; they were close friends of Varda at the time. In another recent work, Bord de mer (2009), Varda recreates three representations and distinct dimensions of time portrayal. To celebrate its exhibition, Blum & Poe partnered with the French Institute Alliance Française, where Varda spoke, and with the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which presented a series of Varda's films and lectures. Speaking at the film society, Varda discussed her latest movie, a documentary made with artist JR called Faces Places.
