Serious crimes rose in New York City after a law to free defendants awaiting trial took effect at the start of the year, New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said Tuesday. Mr. Shea said at a press conference in Manhattan that the city’s latest crime tally shows shootings, assaults, car thefts and robberies are up since the beginning of 2020. Murders, rapes and hate crimes decreased, but, overall, serious crimes rose 16.9% in January compared with the same time a year ago, the police department said.
