New York City Landlord Turns Trash Room Into Modern Art Museum

Julie StavropoulosThe trash room of a Queens apartment complex got a much-needed facelift thanks to a handful of discarded paintings. Julie Stavropoulos tossed out three paintings Sunday only to find them hung up above the community's trash cans in Astoria a day later. The paintings were done at New York's Muse Paintbar and Saratoga Paint and Sip Studio, just two of the many wine and painting businesses—otherwise known as paint 'n' sips—to grow in popularity over the past few years. "I ran into my landlord and she said it was a waste to throw them out and thought they would brighten up the trash alley in the basement," Stavropoulos, an English teacher, told me. In 2017, paint 'n' sip chain Painting With a Twist was named as one of the fastest-growing franchises in the country, according to Entrepreneur magazine.
