New York’s Subway Chief Resigns

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s subway chief resigned Thursday, taking MTA board members, transit advocates and politicians by surprise and raising questions whether his ambitious plan to overhaul the subway will stall. Andy Byford, who is 54, declined to comment on his resignation through an MTA spokesman. His departure comes after a little over two years presiding over a subway turnaround while facing pressure from New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who controls the MTA and is known as a demanding boss.
