Merrymaking was on the top of their agenda as people headed to parks, zoo and picnic spots to start the year with feasts and entertainment. The picnic season this time was marred by incidents of local youths harassing picnickers at several picnic spots in the state. The first day of this year will also be remembered for a hike in train fares and the price of milk. The railways also announced a 2 paise/km hike in fares of mail/express non-AC trains and 4 paise/km hike in the fares of AC classes. The price of milk in the city has been hiked from Rs 46 to Rs 49 per litre, with milk producers citing increased price of cattle feed and labour cost as factors for the hike in price, effective from Wednesday.
