The U.S. reported fewer than 35,000 new coronavirus cases for the second day in a row, as Hurricane Sally threatened to complicate antipandemic efforts in some states. However forecasters expect the hurricane to lash parts of Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle with strong winds, storm surges and dangerous flooding. Officials in Mississippi said Monday that storm shelters were open and that anyone seeking refuge would need to wear protective gear. They urged residents to make alternate arrangements in an attempt to help curb potential spread of the virus. Thousands of people in Louisiana are still sheltering in hotel rooms as a result of Hurricane Laura.
