Greater use of wood in building construction is another option to decarbonizing building materials that is gaining attention. Tools are becoming available to estimate embodied carbon in new construction. The tool, Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator, is free and open-source. However, embodied carbon from concrete, steel, aluminium, iron, and other building materials represents a large portion as well—11% of total global GHG emissions.
