Many states and colleges also rely on the FAFSA to determine a student's eligibility for state and school-based aid. But identity thieves used the IRS data retrieval tool to access the tax records of about 100,000 people. The IRS data retrieval tool is back online, but new security features could create confusion and generate mistakes that delay students from getting financial aid, or prevent them from receiving all of the need-based aid they're entitled to. That means students and their families won't be able to make any corrections to information that's transferred to the FAFSA form from the IRS data retrieval tool.
