New Rohingya refugees arrive with stories of continued military atrocities

Since the Myanmar security forces launched the crackdown in retaliation of insurgent attacks on August 25, more than 436,000 Rohingya refugees have crossed over to Bangladesh to escape the military persecution until Monday, according to the UNHCR. Thousands of Rohingya are arriving at the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar every day. We survived only on water for two days,” said Umme Kulsum, who arrived in Shah Porir Dwip in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar on Saturday. “I sent my children to Kutupalong refugee camp, and am waiting here [Shah Porir Dwip] for my relatives,” she told the Dhaka Tribune on Monday. “Burmese military set Rohingya houses on fire and shot many of them dead yesterday [Sunday] afternoon,” said Md Nur Bashar, a Shah Porir Dwip resident who owns a grocery shop on the bank of the Naf.
