It appeared as though New Plymouth had a smoky start to the day thanks to the Australian bushfires. While New Plymouth appeared to be blanketed by smoke from the Australian bushfires on Thursday, it wasn't. Instead of being smoke that had drifted from across the Tasman sea, the haze that plagued the city all day was merely cloud, Metservice meteorologist Andrew James said. James said although New Plymouth's day of haziness wasn't smoke, the country will see more smoke over the next few days. A southerly wind change is needed to push the smoke away, he said, but nothing was expected any time soon.
