New Plymouth councillor Chong joins New Conservative for election

Murray Chong has been selected to stand for the New Conservative Party in the New Plymouth electorate for the 2020 general election. Controversial New Plymouth district councillor Murray Chong will again stand for Parliament in September's general election, but this time he’s jumped waka. The outspoken councillor’s selection as the 2020 New Conservative candidate followed weeks of rumours after Chong publicly posted endorsements of the party but refused to confirm whether he would be officially standing. Chong claimed he had only just been confirmed as the New Conservative candidate and hadn’t been allowed to comment before it was made official on Wednesday. Chong said he joined New Conservative because he favoured enabling businesses and families to flourish rather than the personality politics of the current government.
