New Mexico Decriminalizes Possession Of Marijuana

New Mexico is the latest state in the U.S. to decriminalize marijuana. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) on Wednesday signed Senate Bill 323, which removes criminal penalties and reduces civil penalties for anyone in the state caught with small amounts of marijuana in their possession. The new law also decriminalizes and reduces the civil penalty for possession of drug paraphernalia of any kind to $50 with a citation. According to the Drug Policy Alliance, a national nonprofit that advocates for drug law reform, New Mexico is the first state in the U.S. to decriminalize possession of drug paraphernalia. Karen O’Keefe of the Marijuana Policy Project celebrated New Mexico’s decision to enact “more humane” policies.
