New Human Rights Committee leader elected under suspicious circumstances - Daily News Egypt

Alaa Abed, parliament bloc chief for the Free Egyptians Party (FEP), was elected leader of the Human Rights Committee. This committee has been source of controversy, given the state’s general approach towards human rights workers, under its former leader Mohamed Anwar Sadat. Anwar Sadat and Parliamentary Speaker Ali Abdul Aal exchanged sharp criticism throughout the first legislative year until Sadat resigned from the post in August. This comes as a local parliamentary news website reported conflicts taking place in the committee ahead of the vote. MP Ahmed Saad replaced MP Mohamed El-Oraby as president of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
