The history and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Medgar Evers, John Lewis and other African-American activists are commemorated at more than 100 museums, churches, courthouses and other sites on the new U.S. Civil Rights Trail. It is the first time significant civil rights destinations have been organized to focus on the movement and encourage tourism, the trail’s founders said. (photo was provided by the U.S. Civil Rights Trail)The trail, which launched earlier this month on Dr. King’s birthday and in advance of Black History Month in February and the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination in April, includes destinations in 14 states pivotal during the 1950s and 1960s. Several sites on the trail predate the modern civil rights era, like the Old Courthouse in St. Louis where the Dred Scott case originated and the historic Tremé neighborhood in New Orleans. The U.S. Civil Rights Trail website features an interactive map, 360-degree videos of landmarks, comparative photographs, and interviews with those who lived during the civil rights period and recount their experiences.
