Apple could, at last, be ready to upgrade one key iPhone spec that has remained untouched since 2014. We believe that the new 2H22 iPhone may support direct 48MP output and 12MP (four cells merge output mode) output simultaneously. With 12MP output, the CIS pixel size of the new 2H22 iPhone increases to about 2.5um, which is significantly larger than the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, and larger than existing Android phones, and close to the DSC level. Nonetheless, if Xiaomi’s results are anything to go by, this major change in iPhone sensor technology will likely cause a generational shift in photographic performance for Apple. With the addition of this new camera, we may finally see the iPhone camera ready to take on the best of the Chinese flagships in terms of raw image quality.
