The newest version of Netflix’s Android app will not officially support rooted and unlocked Android devices, the company said recently. The move has come as a result of the company moving to a new Google-developed content protection system called Widevine, following an update late last year that allowed videos to be downloaded for convenient viewing. This will effectively remove the Netflix app from Google Play on rooted and unlocked devices, though sideloading it using an APK from third-party websites should still work. This move has been introduced in the new version 5.0 of the app, so read that changelog before updating if you’re on a rooted device.
