The British nature documentary producer debuts one of his most high-profile projects this week when Our Planet is released on Netflix Friday. And while it’s filled with the kind of breathtaking cinematography seen in docs like the Planet Earth and Blue Planet series, the hope is that viewers will do more than just admire the eye candy. It’s a tall order, however, especially in light of the study of what’s called the “information-deficit model”: the theory that if you give people new or better facts on something like climate change, it will change minds. Recent research has cast doubt on the model, including a Pew Research Center report in 2016 that found people’s levels of scientific knowledge didn’t necessarily affect their views on climate change.
