“Shonda Rhimes is one of the greatest storytellers in the history of television,” Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, said in a statement. Three Shondaland shows — “Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “How to Get Away With Murder” — remain on ABC’s schedule this fall. Netflix offers Rhimes freedoms that she has not had at ABC, her home for nearly 15 years. At ABC, shows have 22 episodes a season, and episodes that fill hourlong slots are 48 minutes in length with 12 minutes reserved for commercials. At Netflix, Rhimes could do a series with only eight or 10 episodes, and episodes could vary in length.
