Nelson's Julian Matthews meets Olympic Games 1500m qualifiying standardFAIRFAX NZ Julian Matthews in action during the 1500m heats at the Commonwealth Games. Julian Matthews has given himself the best chance of running in Rio after ducking under the Olympic Games qualifying standard. Beating the IAAF and Athletics New Zealand A standard of 3min 36.20sec, Matthews looks to have sealed qualification for his first ever Olympic Games. Wellington's Hamish Carson finished place in 3min 36.25sec, which meets the IAAF B standard and should see him nominated for Olympic selection. Despite meeting the required nomination standard, Matthews will have to wait until the next athletics squad announcement in July before he is guaranteed a seat on the plane to Brazil.
