Leaving behind the sheep farming life in French Pass to encountering albatross the Sub-Antarctic Islands, Nelson scientist Richard Wells' journey in reduce bycatch in the fishing industry has earned him a top government gong. The awards, held for the first time at Parliament’s Grand Hall on August 3, were hosted by Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash. Born into the Wells dynasty synonymous with the Marlborough Sounds, Wells spent his early working days sheep farming at French Pass – until Rogernomics in the 1980s prompted a career change. He also developed vessel management plans across the deepwater fleet, and tools and methods to mitigate bycatch. “It’s been a good journey from a spiritual perspective as well as a good job.”Supplied Richard Wells and daughter Tamar during a visit to the Sub-Antarctic Islands.
